Perhaps it would be foolish, even more so for a “mere“ jazz lover, to look for an apt description of this musical genre or even attempt to define it. We would certainly have to mention the origins of jazz, the geographical roots, the social circumstances and the environment in which jazz was born. We would also have to search through the sources of inspiration which helped jazz to develop so rapidly over the course of a mere hundred years and enabled it to enhance the diversity and beauty of this specific component within the the popular music stream.

The following assertion seems consolation enough to shade the disappointment of attempts in vain to characterize jazz: Jazz is first and foremost, an opinion and position, which provides freedom of expression while searching for the best possible way to exhibit one’s own emotions through musical means. Jazz opens space for a musician’s original ideas and statements. Open mindedness, liberty and honesty are aspects of the heritage passed down from the original Afro-American musicians which may be heard in jazz music till this very day.
