Melanie Scholtz and Brian Charette: Homeland (ZA/US)
Melanie Scholtz – vocals, Brian Charette – keyboard
The South African vocalist Melanie Scholtz and the prize-winning American multi-instrumentalist Brian Charette are joined in life and music. Each of them is active in a number of their own projects, but they are now meeting on one stage in the electronic duo Homeland, and their spirited interpretation of traditional melodies from around the world naturally reflects the couple’s very different musical foundations and experience.
Brian Charette’s synthesisers and electronic percussion give the music funk and catchy beats. Confidently vocal, Melanie Scholtz captivates with her extraordinary timbre and live looping, but also with the ease with which she switches between South African Xhosa and numerous other languages.
Melanie recently followed her partner to New York. To survive or actually excel among the competition of this metropolis of jazz means to secure the respect of the whole world. Experts are well aware of the couple’s connections to the Czech Republic – they have both conducted numerous tours in the country and have even lived here for a time. And so it is the perfect environment for their joint project. The charismatic Scholtz and the superbly skilled and communicative instrumentalist make an ideal couple, and the stage suits them exceedingly well.
