Koncert posluchačů KJI JAMU (CZ, SK)
After almost a decade of existence, the Department of Jazz Interpretation of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts boasts both an excellent teaching staff and, more importantly, talented students.
Jazz interpretation at the Music Faculty of the Janáček Academy was the first study programme of its kind at a Czech academy. Jazz education has a relatively short and turbulently transformative tradition in Europe. The jazz department at the Janáček Academy in Brno is a pioneer of domestic jazz education. It offers the broadest range of disciplines in the country, namely, piano, double bass, percussion, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. Students are mentored by prominent figures of Czech and Slovak jazz, including David Dorůžka, Matúš Jakabčic, Lubomír Šrámek, Rostislav Fraš, Jiří Slavík, Jiří Levíček, Marián Ševčík, Jan Jirucha, and Juraj Bartoš.
The department’s seventh representative concert at the festival will introduce several bands. Listeners might expect some haphazard groupings of anonymous students, but a close look at the line-ups of the individual bands shows that these are mature jazz ensembles, which often perform original compositions of their members.
